Bobcat Basketball is Back!
November has officially started and that means that it's time for basketball! Both our Men's team and our brand-new Women's team were in action this weekend at OCC!
The women kicked off the season on Friday against OCC for the first game in program history! Lead by Coach Clay Sherman the Bobcats more than held their own against a perennial strong team in the Lazer's of OCC. Alvina Davis added 9 points in the first half to lead the Bobcats but the Lazer's kept the pressure on. At half time the Bobcats trailer 39-30. Once the second half started the Bobcats focused on ball security and defensive pressure which helped them cut the lead down before the fourth quarter! However, the Lazers could pull away at the end and defeat the visiting Bobcats by a score of 77-64. Coach Clay "For this being the first game ever in program history I'm proud of the way these women battled. We never gave in and were going to keep that same intensity when they take the floor again tomorrow". (Lakeima Williams 15pts 5 blks, Alvina Davis 13pts, Ashley Salkey 9pts)
On Saturday, the Bobcats hosted the Road Runners from Rowan College of Gloucester County. The Bobcats came out roaring in this one with contributions from Suliat Afolabi (13pts) and Amanda Cruz (12pts) in the first half! We lead 39-36 at halftime over the Road Runners! In the second half, the Bobcats were plagued by turnovers and fouls. The Road runners ended up increasing a lead and holding it to defeat the Bobcats by a score of 72-59. Coach Clay "There are still some areas we need to improve in but it's a long season and we will continue to get better and work as a team going forward" (Suliat Afolabi 21pts, Amanda Cruz 13pts, Alvina Davis 12pts)
The men's team returned for their second season under Coach Dan Frisina as they also took on cross town rival OCC on Friday evening. With an excited crowd in attendance the Bobcats and Lazers battled throughout the entire first half trading buckets along with fouls. After an early technical foul on former Lazer, Quantae Elijah, guards Kobe Mansom and Cheikh Dieng made sure the Bobcats stayed in the game and never let it slip too far away. Xavier Norgbey added 12 points in the first half as well. The Bobcats found themselves down 44-41 at half heading into the locker room. Lead by Jerry Saintelus in the second half, the Bobcats stormed the Lazers with pressure defense, hustle, and clutch shooting to pull away at the end and defeat their new-found rival by a score of 81-76. Coach Frisina "You love to start the season on a high note and it's even better that we were able to take down another local rival on their home floor. I can't believe how well our crowd traveled for this game and we are just looking to keep the momentum going at RCGC tomorrow afternoon". (Xavier Norgbey 26pts, Jerry Saintelus 14pts, Troy Tallman 14pts)
On Saturday, the Bobcats were back in action against Rowan College of Gloucester County. Coach Dan had mentioned to his team before the game to keep up the defensive pressure and look to get out in transition and the Bobcats did just that. At Half time the Bobcats held a lead of 45-36. Aaron Burton lead the charge in the first half with three 3 pointers and Xavier Norgbey added 10 points as well. Once the second half started it was more of the same as the Bobcats increased their lead and held the Road Runners to only 29 points in the second half. The final score was 76-65 Bobcats as they finished the weekend 2-0 and secured the first 2-0 start in program history! Coach Dan "I love the defensive pressure we have put on both teams so far and we can win a lot of games when we keep that up. Buffalo is up next so we will focus on getting ready for that and we will be ready come Wednesday." (Aaron Burton 16pts, Xavier Norgbey 14pts, Troy Tallman 12pts).
