Bobcats Take Double OT Thriller from Maine-Fort Kent
Despite seeing a red card early in the second half, the Bryant & Stratton College Bobcats toppled #4 ranked University of Maine-Fort Kent, 4-3 in a double overtime thirller.
The win represented a touch of redemption for the Bobcats, who were topped by UMFK for the USCAA National Championship in 2015 and 2016, though the real prize awaits the team at the 2018 National Championships in Virginia Beach.
UMFK opened the scoring as Shawn Genus rose to head past Bobcats goalkeeper Babucarr Ceesay. BSC would even the score with the Bengals before the first half closed as Zino Zampach touched past the keeper on an unassisted effort.
The teams traded goals early in the second half as Uros Momic tallied in the 51st minute only to see the score leveled by the Bengals' Dwayne Powell. Shortly after the UMFK tying goal, Joel Desire was given his second yellow card and sent off. The 10-men Bobcats managed to keep UMFK at bay, retaking the lead just six minutes after Desire was sent off. Momic scored his second of the game on a sensational individual effort to give BSC their second lead of the game. But as they did earlier, the Bengals tallied within five minutes of BSC's goal as Travar McCollah scored in the 75th minute to level the score and ultimately send the game to overtime.
After exchanging blows throughout the game - total shots were even at 13 apeice in regulation with 10 registered on target for each team for the entire game - it was the Bobcats who fired the only shot of overtime; and it was a valuable one. Jon Stublla sent a cross into the box for Romaine Williamson who volleyed into the upper corner to give the Bobcats the victory. It was the sixth assist of the season for Stublla (T-2nd in the nation) and the 10th goal for Williamson (T-3rd in the nation).
The third-ranked Bobcats close the season with a home-and-home series with Hartwick College before awaiting their seeding for the 2018 National Championships, where a potential grudge match with UMFK will be on the table once again.
